Well I've had this xbox since 2005. So my warranty has been over for years so can't send it in. But I'm also thinking of just buying an arcade model and sticking in my hdd from the xbox that broke.

Yes it will work, and will be a much cheaper alternative than buying an upper model already having a hdd.
And its more popular possibly cause it gets more publicity than PC gaming?

Possibly. And console gaming is much more accessible to the general public. PC gamers need a basic knowledge of how their PC works and stuff, console gamers just buy it at Future Shop and plug it in at home.
